A quick intro: I'm a new knitter, having started just a few months ago on a whim Strangely, it was a combination of the TV series Firefly and a Foxtrot comic that pushed me over the edge into yarn nirvana.
First of all, I wanted a Jayne hat ([link]), just like the character in Firefly had.
The second inspiration was that Foxtrot comic, where the mother Andy gets out her supplies and announces that, with the holidays coming up, she'd like to knit herself a little something.
That phrase stuck with me. How nice it would be to knit myself a little something...I wanted to have the kind of skill that would allow me to randomly whip up a handmade garment for myself on a whim. And as an added bonus, I'd be able to knit my very own Jayne hat! Suddenly, I really wanted to learn.
One night I got up the guts to drop by a craft store as I waited to meet my brother for dinner, and got some cheap needles, yarn, and an instructional book aimed at kids (figuring if it was simple enough for them, surely I should be able to get it!). I've been at it ever since.
I've certainly already reached the level where I can 'knit myself a little something', and I have - I've got scarves, bags, and hats now. Further, now that I've knit three hats, I feel comfortable tackling the Jayne hat. Yes, I've had the yarn for months now - but I wanted to try some simple hats before tackling that big adventure. When I complete that hat, I'll have achieved both knitting dreams that got me started. I'll truly be able to call myself a knitter, then.
If I can get the Jayne hat done by mid-May (and I'm sure I can!), I think I'll treat myself to the LYS Yarn Tour ([link])! It's a special event held over 4 days around 24 local (and semi-local) yarn stores. I doubt I can possibly make it to all 24, but my 2 "regular" stores are on the list, and a number of others are close by. Each store has a free 1-skein pattern you can pick up, and special sales just for those days. YAY!
